Our Origin Story
Where It All Started
It was 2018, in a small apartment den office in Burbank, California. John and Jed were lamenting the state of their industry — the uninspired pitch cycles, the platforms that didn't understand real filmmaking, and the agencies that treated production teams as afterthoughts.
They'd spent years producing everything from national broadcast campaigns to scrappy no-budget passion projects. And somewhere along the way, the part they loved most about filmmaking — the creative freedom, the collaborative thrill of making something from nothing — had gotten buried under corporate process.
But their spec work? Their passion projects? Those still had the magic. Getting together with your best friend, spending a month pulling off a production by the skin of your teeth, and ending up with work you were genuinely proud of. This became the DNA of Spexster (derived from "Spec").

The Turning Point: From Pitch Deck to Platform
After a patent attorney validated the concept in 2019, John called Jed on the drive home. Jed's answer was immediate: "Yep, let's do it." No VCs, no corporate boards — just two filmmakers building the tool they desperately needed.
Spexster was officially underway. Self-funded by the founders, built on a decade of production experience, and driven by one core belief: the people who actually make this industry work deserve a platform that works for them.
"Made from Spec. Forged in Hard Work… and a good sense of humor."
